Preventing Harmful Hydrocarbons Spills
Proper Fueling
Hydrocarbons such as gas, diesel and petroleum can be deadly to marine life! Hydrocarbons
are a toxic substances that is very difficult to clean when spilled in an aquatic habitat.
The following are good practices you can adopt:
- Avoid spilling fuel into the water
- Avoid transferring fuel between tanks when on the water
- Have fuel absorbent materials ready
- Check and fix fuel or oil leaks
- When a spill happens, it is not recommended to use detergent or
soap to disperse the hydrocarbons as it only displaces the problem
- Don't pump oily bilge water overboard
- Secure an oil absorbent pad in your bilge or install a bilge filter system

Tips for Cleaning up Small Spills
- When a spill occurs, first make sure to stop the source of the spill
- For small spills you can use fuel absorbent materials. Even in the water they will
absorb only hydrocarbons
- Do not use detergent soap to disperse the spill
